Pickup Artists: A Short History, from Ross Jeffries to NLP
The pickup artist movement began in 1980s–90s America as a self-help circle for socially anxious men, then spawned a large toolkit of manipulation. Here is the history and its lessons.
The term pickup artist (PUA) emerged in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s. At first it described a small circle of men who struggled socially and swapped notes on how to talk to women.
From self-help to playbook
Many early participants had real social anxiety. Online they traded advice on starting conversations, keeping them going and coping with rejection. In part, it was peer support. Some of that advice is still ordinary social sense: slow down, make eye contact, be curious about the other person.
Ross Jeffries and NLP
In the late 1980s Ross Jeffries began selling courses built on ideas borrowed from neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), such as:
- Anchoring: linking an emotion to a gesture or word.
- Embedded commands: hiding instructions inside sentences to influence the listener unconsciously.
The core idea was to get around the other person's conscious judgement, which is where PUA's reputation for manipulation begins. NLP itself has very weak empirical support.
An ending that is often overlooked
Years later, Jeffries reflected in interviews that despite all the techniques he had never truly loved anyone, and felt he had lost the capacity to love. What he had become hooked on, he said, was control, not intimacy.
Lessons
- Social skills can be learned and are worth learning. That was the useful part of the early community.
- Techniques that bypass someone's will end up hurting both people.
- Lasting attraction rests on honesty, respect and emotional stability. That is the foundation of everything on this site.
FAQ
Can NLP make someone fall for you?
There is no reliable scientific evidence for that. Many NLP claims have failed empirical tests.
Does the PUA community still exist?
Yes, as courses, videos and paid communities. Quality varies widely, and much of it still teaches manipulation.
Will learning PUA make me a bad person?
Learning social skills is fine. The question is what you learn. Tactics that take away the other person's choice are manipulation.
